The Rise of Blogging

The blog is a popular new form of socializing, getting information, and giving it.  It is probably one of the most popular activities to do online now.

What is Blogging?

The term blog actually comes from the word weblog.  Blogging is writing.  It is posting bits of your thoughts and opinions on topics or just general ideas online.  You can blog about anything.  People can add pictures, music, or edit blogs any way they like.  They can also allow readers to comment on their thoughts and create discussion.

Who does it?

Anyone that can type and has something to say can write a blog about anything they like.  Teens can keep online diaries about their day, a doctor in a foreign country can talk about his/her experiences, and even a housewife can express her political views.  But, it’s not just a form of personal expression.  Businesses even use blogging for advertisement and feedback purposes.  In fact, they have become a popular tool for this.

Where Did it Come From?

It is not certain where exactly blogging came from, or how it got started.  Many may speculate that blogging derived from seeing people typing computer diaries.  Though this is a reasonable speculation, it is not certain.  All that is sure is that the phrase “weblog,” which is the basis for blogging, was created by a man named Jorn Barger in 1997.  It may have developed long before that, but it hasn’t been a concrete idea, documented, for even two decades.

Growing Quickly

Even though it is not sure exactly how long blogging has been around or where it came from, it is certain that this is going to be a world-changing industry.  The popularity is growing quickly, and it shows no signs of stopping.  Even businesses are cashing in on the many advantages and the popularity of such an activity.

But Why?

Blogging is an unusual phenomenon that is growing rapidly, probably because of two factors.  One thing is that everyone has something to say.  They want to be heard by someone else as they express their thoughts and opinions.  Who doesn’t?  Posting something online is a near guarantee that someone will listen to what you have to say.  It’s a safe way to express yourself without the worry of getting funny looks, or worse, from your friends and family.

Blogging is probably also popular because it is easy.  The software used for blogging is far easier than web design, and almost anyone can use it.  It does not take a professional.  You don’t need any training, either.  So, nearly anyone can blog.  Easy to post means a lot of people doing it, and a lot of people reading blogs as well.

With the simplicity of such an action that allows a person to become heard without any struggle, it is no wonder that blogging has grown so quickly in such a short amount of time, nor is it a wonder that businesses are jumping on the train as well.  The development of blogging is no doubt one that will change the world.  So, even though it is not known who wrote the first blog, whoever and wherever you are, the world is thankful.
